For The New Owner
If you have just purchased or have just set your system up, or you simply are being plagued by multitudinous pop ups, take a few minutes and go over the information on this page. It could very well save you many headaches and lots of money in the long run...
There is a new and very scary trend out there all of a sudden. There is a new breed of virus stalking the internet. Not only will it infect your computer, but it can actually do physical damage to the hard drive. I haven't seen things like this since the mid nineties.
Without going into a lot of detail that is guaranteed to put you instantly to sleep, suffice it to say that you absolutely must keep your virus protection current at all times.
Last week a guy I've known for a couple of years brought his computer in for cleaning. I booted up his system and the screen filled at once with some of the most lurid porn you can imagine.
Like I said I've known this guy a couple of years. He and his wife are into their kids, the PTA, their church and so forth; sound family people.
They or one of their kids might have misspelled a URL in the address bar or opened an email attachment or one of about a thousand other ways computers can get infected lately. There are suddenly entirely new and very cleverly written software attack systems afoot and they are hunting for you...
So, pay attention folks...
There are several very good anti virus systems to download for free (Freeware) or for trial (Shareware). For the free ones you need only download and install. Of those we have looked at we have picked two that stand out from the rest.
In no particular order our picks are:
AVAST!
What Avast offers:
Anti-spyware built-in Web Shield,
Anti-rootkit built-in Automatic updates,
Strong self-protection Virus Chest,
Antivirus kernel System integration,
Simple User Interface Integrated Virus Cleaner,
Resident protection Support for 64-bit Windows
P2P and IM Shields Internationalization
Network Shield
This one is very hard to beat. For the home user it has everything necessary to keep you out of trouble online. It updates itself and aside from the daily audio announcement that it has updated, it runs quietly and trouble free in the background.
SuperAntiSpyware
Above all else it must be understood that there is no such thing as a perfect security solution. There is an excellent anti spyware program (also free) called SuperAntiSpyware. This is a great way to keep whatever antivirus and anti-spyware defense systems you are using, honest. It’s the same thing as getting that all important second opinion. No matter what antivirus system you use, you must constantly cross check your defense. The hackers and spammers certainly will.
And last but still extremely important, about once a month go online and get your computer scanned by one of these online virus scanning programs. These scans are free and serve as a great way to cross check your security system.
The first three we recommend are:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.html
http://onecare.live.com/site/enUs/center/cleanup.htm
There are many 'free' online scanners available, but often you may be wasting your time with certain of them as they will scan your system, show you the list of infections and then demand money to remove them. Can we say "bait and switch"? The scanners we recommend are actually free and very good too.
Affordable Custom Built Systems
We also build custom, one of a kind systems for the true power user who'd rather buy performance than a sales pitch. Our custom systems cost little more than the off the shelf system sold by the large outlets but come with higher quality parts, better workmanship, a vastly superior potential for upgrade, plus local, personal support by the system's builders.
